Surviving Summer School

Summer school sounds like a bad idea for any student threatened with it; precious weeks of summer thrown away with more of what one’s gone through all year. It’s a nightmare, sometimes brought on by no fault of the victim’s. It may seem like the end of the world… But it doesn’t have to be.

First of all, don’t freak out. It seems like a big deal, but it really isn’t. As long as you follow the rules – which are the same as school rules, so shouldn’t be hard to adapt to – and do your work, it’s really better than the normal school year. It takes only a few weeks. That may seem like a bad idea to some. How is one supposed to finish all their work in that amount of time? But really, just going over the essentials, it’s no more work than you’d get during the school year. The only difference is that it’s all one subject all day.

Stay busy. Keep at your work until it’s done, and the time will fly. What if you finish your work? Bring a book, a pen and paper, a sketchbook, something to keep you occupied. Otherwise, you’ll find the days crawling by. Keeping your mind on things other than the passage of time is a great way to get time to pass.

Don’t forget to be friendly. The other people in your class are in the same boat. You already have something in common there. If you strike up a conversation or two, you may wind up with some friends to make the entire experience more pleasant. Just make sure you don’t talk when the teacher tells you not to.

Leave school at school. When the day is done, relax. You won’t have any homework from summer school, so you don’t need to worry about that. Once you’ve gotten home, stop thinking about school, and let your mind wander onto something else. Do something you enjoy that you couldn’t do in school. Let yourself have your summer break.

Give yourself some time. It will take a few days for you to get into the habit of going to school again. It’s just like starting a new school year, and you’ll need a few days to get your bearings. Don’t be hard on yourself because you messed up in the beginning. You need some time to adjust.

Summer school isn’t the most fun way to spend a summer, but it doesn’t have to be the apocalypse. Just relax, take it in stride, and keep yourself occupied. It will be over before you know it.
