Why Distance Learning can be a Good way to Study when you Suffer from Social Anxiety

When you suffer from severe social anxiety you can miss out on life because you’re overwhelmed by negative feelings towards yourself and the tension you experience when you try to get out into the real world and interact with other people. You may have always been introverted and shy, but sometimes the situation gets worse as you get older and it becomes harder and harder for you to leave the house to go to school or to work. This has a detrimental impact on your self-esteem and usually leaves you feeling worthless. You can find yourself stuck in the house with nothing to occupy your time.

You don’t have to miss out on an education, though, as you could always decide to take a distance learning course where you don’t need to leave the house to attend lectures or tutorials and where you don’t have to speak to your tutor or other students. When you’re free from the anxiety that comes with being around other people you can focus on your studies and actually achieve something. You don’t have to let your social anxiety hold you back from accomplishing something that could potentially boost your confidence. You are able to work towards a qualification that could help you get a job in the future.

Taking a distance learning course won’t necessarily help you deal with your problems, as you have to be able to engage with people on some level to function normally, but at least you will be using your time constructively. Although you may not be ready to leave the house and start socializing at least you will be taking a step in the right direction by continuing with your education and looking towards the future. Employers will obviously look more favourably upon your application if you have spent your time at home doing something useful.

With distance learning you will probably be able to communicate with your tutor and other students through online forums and via email, which is unlikely to fill you with as much fear as having to talk face-to-face or on the telephone. It may be possible for you to connect with one or two of the other students and to become more confident in your exchanges; you may even decide to meet up one day. Distance learning can therefore help you to obtain a qualification and break your isolation, making you feel more upbeat about the future. Your social anxiety won’t disappear overnight, but you can take positive steps to help yourself.
