Choosing a college: How important is location?
When choosing a college, location should be one of your deciding factors. After all, you’ll be spending a great deal of time there, and you want to be comfortable!
The first thing you have to consider is how far away from home is it. If you’d like to be able to drive home every day, you need a college that is very near to your house. If you’d like to be able to drive home on the weekend, and then back the same weekend, it can be further away. However, if you aren’t fond of driving, don’t pick a school that is so far away that the driving time bothers you.
Or perhaps you want to go far away. Go for it! Remember though, that when it comes time to return home for holidays or other special events, that you’ll have a long trip ahead of you. Also, besides being long, plane flights or train tickets can be expensive, so you’ll have to factor that in and see if it’s worth it.
The location of your school is also important because you want to choose a school that is near what you like. If you prefer the suburbs, don’t pick a city school. You’ll have a much better time in relative peace and quiet. If you love the city, don’t pick a school that is out in the middle of nowhere. You’ll miss the hustle and bustle of the city.
You must also ask yourself if the school is near to other places you’d like to go. For example, is it near a mall? A museum? The movies? A supermarket? These are all places that college students may want to go to sometime during their college stay. If you pick a school in the suburbs, you’ll want to know if it’s near a major city, which will have more of a selection to choose from.
Location also comes into play when you consider how expensive everything is. For example, if you go to a school in an upper class area, it stands to reason that the stores will have expensive prices. Will you be able to afford the items you need to buy?
It is for these reasons and many more that location is a very important deciding factor in choosing a college. Check out your location before you decide on a school!
