As a college student saving money is one of the most important things that is constantly on the mind. There are a variety of ways to do this in every aspect of life, but the most important thing that we as humans do is eat. Now while eating top ramen and peanut butter and jelly is cheap, easy and quick it is certainly not healthy and gets old rather fast. With all of the availability of food in the local market eating healthy and on a budget does not have to be hard. Take a look at the following information and begin making your grocery list that will help your wallet stay fat and avoid giving your body that dreaded Freshman 15.
So while you might have been purchasing the fruit that has been processed and put in to syrup or canned in extra juices, it is time to take a step back and look at the world of fresh or frozen fruit. While fresh fruit is the best route to go, there are times when it can be rather expensive, if the fruits are not in season. If this is the case in your area, or you find that the local supermarket is always running out look for a frozen fruit that has ‘no syrup added’ and ‘no sugar added.” These are two very important things to look for when buying fruit and vegetables. Nothing added to them will mean they are just pre-cut and washed and stored into a freezer bag with some sort of fruit fresh or possibly lemon juice.

Meat products are a good thing to buy while they may be on sale. If you are a person who enjoys eating steak, hamburgers, or chicken breasts often, take a look in your local newspapers and see what are in the ads. While there are many sale prices for meats, you might also check the section itself to see if any meat is marked down for sale. The grocery stores will often move their soon to expire meat towards the front, meaning you can find them for cheaper price and use them sooner.
While bread and carbohydrates are considered a no no when it comes to eating healthy you can opt in for some wheat thins, or whole wheat crackers. These items are not only healthy but offer a great snack for those midnight cramming sessions. Crackers with sliced cheese or a dollop of peanut butter are healthy and will also give you brain power to keep going.
Another example of a healthy way to eat while still keeping your money in your pocket is by opting out of drinking soda and other bad for you drinks. While this can be difficult, it will keep you healthy, give you more energy and give you more money. Instead of drinking soda pop, coffee, or other energy drink types, drink some water or brewed iced tea with no sugar. These types of drinks will keep you hydrated, erase the toxins from your body and keep you feeling refreshed and a lot less lethargic.
So instead of picking up the phone and ordering that pizza, drive down to the market and see if you can find some meat and potatoes on sale and make yourself a beef stew from scratch. These few tips are meant to guide you and show you that while ramen and fast food are an option, there are many other ways to eat healthier and on your budget.
