So, you’ve just joined college, and you’re completely free and on your own for the first time. This can be a great experience because, for the first time in your life, you’re 100% responsible for yourself, and all of your actions. No one can tell you what to do anymore, at least, not in your personal time. You can do whatever you want, and your life is in your own hands. But, this said, it can be a hard thing to do on your own. And now that you’re on your own, many people struggle with making friends right away. There’s just so much to take in, and everything seems so… different. But no worries, you’re not alone, and there are many ways you can make friends, and still be yourself.
The first thing to keep in mind is that you’re not the only person who goes through this type of feeling. After that, remember, it’ll be a lot easier to make friends if you’re looking in the right places, being yourself, and doing what you love. One of the most convenient ways to do this is to join a club.
Clubs offer great opportunities to make friends because everyone is on common ground. There are no superiors, and you aren’t being thrown into anyone’s domain- it’s all free range. In addition to this, people join clubs because the club offers something they’re interested in. If you’ve joined the same club, then that’s at least one thing you have in common already. These clubs will offer you something to start talking about, and a way to get involved with the community that surrounds you at college.
Be confident, and be proud of who you are, then all that’s left to do is be social. Make an effort to talk to all the people in the club. You don’t even have to worry about scheduling time to meet with your new friends; that’s already been done for you. The club will offer you regular times to get together with the new people you’ve met, and each meeting will provide you with a new opportunity to make friends and improve your relationships with each and every person. Before you know it, have made more friends than you ever expected to. College won’t seem quite so lonely or intimidating with a new friend by your side.
