How to Procrastinate

Procrastination is often thought of as a dirty word; procrastinators are lazy and stupid, and procrastinating is always a useless activity. In reality, this is not the case. If you procrastinate the right way, it can help you get your schoolwork done and improve the quality of your life.

It is important to remember that college is not all about school. While school is important, these may be the best years of your life, and you do not want to spend them completely buried in books. If school is taking over your life, it is important to take a step back and put things into perspective. Consider using the ten-year rule: when you are stressed out over something, ask yourself if it is really going to matter in ten years. In most cases, it is not. You will be a happier, healthier person if you stop letting school stress you out and procrastinate sometimes.

Many college students procrastinate by spending hours on the Internet, surfing Facebook and chatting. This is not a healthy way to procrastinate. Although they may be socializing with their friends, online interaction is not the same as face-to-face time. Get out of your dorm or your apartment and spend time with your friends. This will cheer you up and allow you to tackle your schoolwork with new vigour.

Doing things that relax you is another great way to procrastinate. Give yourself a spa day, ask a friend for a back rub, or watch a silly movie. Stress is unpleasant and can even be dangerous, so you should not feel like you are doing something wrong. After you treat yourself to something indulgent, you will be able to go back to your work with renewed passion.

One final way to procrastinate is to do something physical. Go for a jog or a swim, or do yoga or tai chi. Physical activity will relieve stress, and it is beneficial to your health. Cleaning is also physical, plus you have the bonus of having a cleaner living space when you’re done.

This encouragement of procrastination does come with a warning: It is important to not use this advice at the wrong time. The time to procrastinate is not the morning of a test or the evening when you should be writing an essay. Don’t go out and party when you know you should be studying. You do need to take school seriously. Just don’t let it be the sole focus of your life. Using these tips wisely will help you to live a happy, healthy, and balanced life.
