How to Stop Procrastinating about Writing your Research Paper

Although most people don’t think that writing a research paper is fun, most people in college will have to earn experience writing one. So, when you have the chance to write a research paper, there is no time for you to spend slacking. Instead, get going, start researching, and start writing. The more you practice and write, the more your writing skills will improve.

Procrastination when writing a research paper is not a good thing. First of all, you have no legitimate excuse for saying why you could not write your research paper. Second, the more time you waste not wanting to write your paper, the less time you have for writing your paper well. So if you want to learn how to stop procrastinating bout your research paper, here’s how:

1. Write your paper in a study group. You do not have to bounce any ideas around, but it may be helpful to be able to ask other people about how your essay is coming along. If you are writing papers for the same class, then you have to be careful not to plagiarize each other’s ideas. However, being around others who are doing the same thing can motivate you in completing your own work.

2. Take all your distractions away. If you have a television around, don’t start to write your research paper there. If you are around any other people, try to find a place where you can be alone. If you cannot have music on, try to put your music away. However, if music will help you concentrate (and some people find it easier to concentrate with background noise), then leave your music on.

3. Try not to start writing your paper on the computer. Instead, use the library as your first resource for information. Once you have a little bit of information and you have already started on a couple of pages, then you can finally go on your computer. This way, your mind starts getting into the mode of thinking about an essay. Sometimes, you have to take all your distractions away in order for your mind to fully work.

4. Finally, don’t procrastinate so much that you only have two or three days to complete your paper. Research papers take time, many drafts and corrections, and many resources, to fully complete. If you do not have time, you will not write a good research paper. Look at the calendar. If you have less than one week to do your paper, you should probably have started yesterday.

Procrastination can be debilitating, but you don’t have to be another statistic. Once you start writing, you will find that it is easier to actually do the paper than to be stressing about it daily because you haven’t even started.
