Reasons to take the AP English Language and Composition Exam

The AP English Language and Composition course and exam are great tools for high school students who wish to excel in college.  AP classes are very rigorous and require time, effort, and intellect to complete.  There are many benefits of taking the AP English Language and Composition course, however.  Here are a few of the reasons that high school students should decide to take the AP English Language exam.

College credit

The most obvious reason that students should try to take the exam is to receive college credit.  The AP English Language and Composition exam covers basic compositions skills that colleges require of most students.  If you pass the exam, many colleges will give you a three-hour credit for your achievement.

To pass the exam, you must receive a score of 3 on the exam.  Only a few colleges will give credit for a 3.  Most, however, will give you credit for a 4 or 5.  Exams are measured on a 1 to 5 scale.  Even if your college does not give you credit for a course, your admissions counselor may use the exam to place you in a higher level or honors course as a sign of your achievement.

The AP English Language course material covers important information that will be useful to anyone that is working towards college.  AP English Language focuses on the study of nonfiction material and gives you the tools you need to analyze that material.  This curriculum can assist students in important skills that will be necessary in college.

AP English Language requires that students are able to not only read and comprehend a non-fiction work, but also to analyze it for its significance.  Students in AP English Language also learn how to draw their own meaning from the work and put it together in a thoughtful analysis.  These skills are all of the same skills used in effective college research papers.

Preparation for college

The AP courses and exams are built to be much like real college courses.  Some teachers even argue that AP courses are more difficult than typical college classes.  Because of the rigor of AP courses, those students who take AP courses are more prepared for college.  According to one study, simply participating in an AP course can improve a student’s chances in college due to the course’s academic rigor.
