A college degree may not guarantee that you will have success in your career, but it certainly can’t hurt to have one! In today’s society, competition for jobs is great and with more and more people going to college, not having one could hurt your chances of employment. Whether you are just starting out or you have been working in the same type of job for many years, potential employers like to see that you have got an education beyond that which is compulsory. In some cases, you won’t even be asked to attend an interview if you have not attended college.
Clearly, there are some careers which require you to have a college degree. You’re hardly likely to go far in the medical profession if you are not prepared to train for it. Similarly, if you want to become a teacher or social worker, you have to undertake a period of study at college. There is no getting away from the fact that you have to go to college to even be considered for these sorts of jobs. Even if you do not have a specific career in mind, though, possessing a college degree can still be helpful because of the skills you pick up at college and the contacts you make.
Indeed, in many cases it isn’t even that important what you study. Even if you train to become a teacher, it doesn’t mean you have to stick with that profession if you discover it’s not for you. Simply having a degree will indicate to future employers that you have the intelligence to get ahead and that you are also able to work hard to succeed. This will obviously reflect positively on you, which wouldn’t be the case if you had misbehaved at school, been expelled and failed to obtain any qualifications.
A college degree isn’t the be-all and end-all when it comes to pursuing a career, but it will certainly open your eyes to the range of options open to you. You may enjoy studying History, but wonder how this will be relevant in the real world. By going to college you will get to learn about a subject you find fascinating and pick up skills that can be applied in any workplace. You will also discover that there are a range of careers within the field of History that you may then decide to pursue.
College has so much to offer. There are courses for people from all backgrounds and with all sorts of interests. It is worth picking up a few prospectuses or looking at them online just to see what kinds of subjects are there to be studied. There is bound to be something of interest to you, which is important if you want to be able to develop a career that you actually find to be fulfilling. Without a college degree you might have no other choice than to stick to run-of-the-mill jobs which just about pay the rent. Seeing as though you will be working for most of your adult like, this is hardly the situation you want to find yourself in.
