Pipe cleaners are perhaps one of the most interesting objects you and your child can use during playtime. Even though pipe cleaners are not complicated, and neither are they very expensive, you can still use them for a variety of activities that are both fun and educational. Here are a few fun projects that you can do with your child during playtime using pipe cleaners.
Pipe Cleaner People
To create pipe cleaner people, you will need a few pipe cleaners. Choose different colors to make the project more interesting-looking. You will also need a cotton ball and a few pieces of colorful construction paper (for eyes, mouth, nose, hair, etc.). Stick the cotton ball onto a pipe cleaner. This will make the head and the torso/body. Add arms and legs by bending the pipe cleaners. You may need to cut the pipe cleaners in half. Make a family of pipe cleaner people. Have your child create stories about them.
Pipe Cleaner Jewelry
To easily make fun and inexpensive pipe cleaner “jewelry,” you will need a few pipe cleaners as well as other nick-knacks that you may want to add. To make a bracelet for a 5” wrist, you will need one long pipe cleaner. Wrap the pipe cleaner around your child’s hand to measure the size of the bracelet. Then, twist the ends together to form the bracelet. Before closing it, you may add beads (those with large holes) as well as charms. You can perform these same instructions for necklaces and anklets.
Pipe Cleaner Flowers
For this, you will need colorful tissue paper and pipe cleaners. Cut rectangular pieces of colorful tissue paper (6”x8” work well, as long as the shape is rectangular). Stack 15-20 sheets together and start folding as if you were making a paper fan (accordion-style). Once you’re done folding, place a green pipe cleaner in the middle and wrap one end around the middle of the stick of papers (this is for the stem). Start to unfold and unravel the sheets. You’ll see the flower start to form. Use green pipe cleaners to make leaves. To make the flower sturdier, you can use two green pipe cleaners for the stem.
At first, pipe cleaners don’t seem all that exciting. However, once you start using your imagination, you can easily see that pipe cleaners are great for playtime.
