Recess is a very important part of a child’s learning. A school does not only provide a student with the chance to excel academically but also socially. Recess is the most important time for a child to interact with another child. Some of the most important lessons that life has to offer might be learned during recess time.
A school’s environment is like a mini community where children from different backgrounds might come to study. When a child interacts with children from different cultures and backgrounds he would develop the skills that would pave the way for more tolerance. There would be less discrimination. It would also enable the students to learn and practice good character traits which would help them become better human beings in the long run.
Another important aspect to consider is that children play different kinds of games during recess time. This helps develop qualities like sportsman spirit. This is very important in this day and age where exercise is considered vital for a person’s health. Students will be able to have physical exercise everyday which would keep them healthy. Recess time if taken seriously can have a positive impact on a child’s life. It is known to help reduce the risk of various diseases. It will also improve test scores and built self esteem of those children who are not doing well academically but are excellent in sports and physical activities.
Students have a number of problems that they wish to talk about with the teacher. However, it is generally seen that due to shortage of time these problems are left unheard. Recess time can be an excellent time for teacher-student interaction. The teacher is able to listen to the problems of her students and provide appropriate solutions to them. This would help in establishing a bond between a teacher and her students.
However, the teacher’s role is vital in order to get the above mentioned benefits. The teacher needs to be actively involved. She needs to provide appropriate equipment. She needs to regularly change the activities so that the students are not bored. The physical education teacher can provide assistance in this matter. Clear rules need to be set so that there is no injury. The teacher needs to provide games where “the score” isn’t the main objective. She should decide on activities that all students with different fitness levels and gross motor skills can play.
