Ever since many adults can remember, homework has been an integral part of education and was widely believed to reinforce many of the concepts students learned in school during that day or week. However, as time has passed, many people now see the reasons why students should not have homework. Some of the reasons for this have to do with equality, retention, motivation and the results of various studies. This article analyzes some of the reasons why students should not have homework and illustrates that homework is not always necessary.
Motivation and effectiveness

Unfortunately, many children have both parents working, often for many hours, so they do not have the support at home that richer children will have who often have nannies and other support figures helping them learn. This creates an inequality in and out of the classroom where students from higher socio-economic classes can get more support and resources and are more easily able to complete their homework than their poorer student counterparts. This is a crucial reason why students should not have homework as everyone should have an equal shot of succeeding, especially when it comes to education. It would discourage many students to see that they were ill prepared for school compared to their wealthier counterparts. Such structural disadvantages should not be taking place within our classrooms.
In most 9 to 5 jobs, do we expect employees to do homework? The answer is typically no. As such, why do we expect so much more of young kids than we would from grown adults who have more discipline, learning capacity and self control than young kids? Many believe that this excessive workload does not help kids and actually causes them to burn out. In addition, this overemphasis on homework does not provide time for children to engage in other social activities. If this happened, it would inevitably help out many local businesses who would be providing entertainment and food services to these students. Allowing this to take place would, based on this analysis, create a more fair result for many people in society, not just the students themselves.
Although conventional wisdom would indicate many reasons why students should receive homework on a regular basis, the truth seems to be there are many reasons why students should not have homework. The reasons in this article are just a limited list of the many reasons that other educational tools other than homework should be used to motivate students to learn and grow.
