The Argument for no Homework

Homework is often seen as pointless busywork. The reinforcement of key concepts and formulas is necessary to some extent, but the educational landscape is being obliterated with technology, thus rendering the value of homework obsolete. Rote learning and memorization are no longer part of the curriculum, leading some to believe that students should not have homework.

The academic career of a student is a long, tenuous journey that spans childhood into young adulthood. Along the educational path, a student transforms in many facets, and must navigate through the harsh reality of peer pressure, anxiety, and a cavalcade of assignments. Time to unwind and decompress are necessary for the sanity and overall health and well-being of students.

While students traverse their schooling, one aspect should be minimized for their benefit; homework. There are many reasons why students should not have homework cluttering up their education. There are a lot of ways to learn that do not involve the perceived pointless busywork that is homework.

*Family Time

The erosion of the family unit does not need help from homework. Many families are already saddled with a reduction in quality family time due to divorce or separation, work schedules, extra-curricular involvement, and the influences of the Internet and television. Homework can prove to be a frustrating endeavour for students and parents alike.

Families need to spend time together when possible, so the prospect of having a few hours of homework per night is rather detrimental to the family unit.

There are many wonderful things that families can do together that will aid in the learning process for their children. Parents can help their children in many ways, as education needs to be rounded to include the outside world. Many things are not learned within the confines of a textbook or algebraic formula. This is one of the reasons why students should not have homework.

*Integrity of Credits

School credits should be earned by students through diligent work while at school. When homework is assigned, the teacher has little to no impact on the student. This leads many students to seek assistance elsewhere. This form of cheating compromises the integrity of the credits, which is a key component to the argument that students should not have homework.

The Internet offers forth endless help for students with homework assignments in need of completion. Many students will ‘cheat’ by copying and pasting obscure passages from websites, or they may get too much help from overzealous parents that are intent on having their children achieve well. No matter the case, the student is not learning the material, nor are they developing their problem solving skills. This is a major reason why students should not have homework.

Some children have parents that are either unwilling or unable to help them, and they are thus unable to complete their homework well. This may leave them lagging behind other students that have had the advantage of fraudulent assistance. The integrity of the credits must be upheld, and left completely to the discretion of the teacher. Work done outside of the classroom should not be graded.


Students need to decompress after spending a day in class. They do not need to be saddled with homework. Many students have part-time jobs, sports teams, and friendships. Once school lets out for the day, a typical student has many other commitments to attend to, reducing the amount of time they can possibly spend on homework.

All work and no play can be harmful. Homework, incomplete, may result in a forfeiture of marks, which can wreak havoc on the post-secondary career options for many students. Homework does not need to dictate the ability of a student. This is another reason why students should not have homework.

*Time to be a Kid

Students need a chance to be kids. They need to leave school and find time to play and socialize. They need to get exercise and fresh air, and they need to play without rules and expectations. Children need a chance to be children. Homework can lead to a growing dislike of school, which can translate into poor attendance, poor grades, and possible failure.


The typical backpack of a child is bulging at the seams, making it not only awkward, but too heavy to expect a child to carry. While this may seem a frivolous reason to not have homework, it does have merit. Many children are suffering from poor health and nutrition, and adding the burden of a stuffed backpack onto a small child’s back can cause many health related problems for years to come.

As a result of having too much stuff to bring home, a child may also conveniently ‘forget’ to bring home a textbook or binder, thus debilitating their ability to complete assigned homework. This can lead to teachers becoming additionally stressed at work, and also adds work for them to complete at night.

There are many other reasons why students should not have homework. Some experts believe that backpacks are weighted down and causing back problems in children. From whichever perspective you view the debate, some homework may be required from time to time, but the assumption that every night should include homework is inane.
