Bullying in schools is inevitable, because bullies can be found in all walks of adult life. Trying to eliminate bullying in schools does nothing to combat the problem of why bullying occurs in the first place. Also, kids will grow up to be bullied about every day by their employers, their politicians and their neighbors. They need to learn how to deal with bullies as children so they can get ready for real life as an adult.
A Different Perspective
Whether we want to admit it or not, we all need enemies. These enemies are the cause of all of the problems in our lives and we must fight the good fight against them. As a child, these enemies are school bullies or abusive adults. As an adult, enemies become either a certain group of people, or more intangible things like poverty, disease or corruption. In order to learn the skills to fight as adults, we need to learn to fight as children.
Encountering your first schoolyard bully is a traumatic experience only because it is your first time. Getting your first injection against disease is also a painful experience which can make you feel helpless, but over time, you realize that getting inoculations is not so bad. Although as parents, we would like to shield our children from all dangers, it’s just not possible. They need to be inoculated against being bullied in the future by learning to deal with their fist school bullies.
Dangers Of Over Protecting
Children tend to think that they are the center of the universe because in their homes, they are stared at a lot. When they get bullied and all adults rush to their defense, then all the children learn is that other people have to take care of their problems. You can’t put your kids in a completely sterile environment devoid of germs or their body’s immune system will not work. In the same way, children need to learn as quickly as possible to rely on themselves.
You don’t need to completely ignore a child complaining about being bullied. You can offer first aid, a shoulder to cry on and share your stories of how you deal with the bullies in your life. Let your kids know that being bullied is a normal thing and that they haven’t done anything wrong. Everyone gets bullied even the bullies.
Eventually, the kids work their own problems out. This is how children have grown up since our species began. If the kids are not left to work their own problems out, then they grow up assuming that they can get all their problems solved by having someone else protect them. They are in for a rude shock when they get older and realize that no one is going to stick up for them as adults.
