High School Teacher Tips how to Handle the Class Clown

There are many different personalities in high school, and there are going to be a lot of people that you are going to have to deal with as a high school teacher. During my time in high school, and during my time as a tutor, I have learned a lot about how a high schooler is going to deal with school. There are some things though that you can do to keep a kid in line, but not have to totally keep them down. Here is how you deal with a class clown.

The best thing you can do with any type of personality is to just go with it a little bit. You aren’t going to change a person, and that natural personality is going to be there from time to time. As long as the kid isn’t being disruptive I don’t if there is really anything that you should do. In fact you could be making the problem worse if you are going to do anything.

I remember the class clowns that I had in my class during school. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that the class clown is usually just trying to get attention. Even if you take the kid out of the class, or try to discipline him in a way that makes the class aware of it, you have actually done the kid a favor.

Most class clowns are just doing things because they think they will get a reaction out of you, or someone else. If you act visibly frustrated, or like you have reacted, the class clown has won. Don’t do anything until after class, in fact ignoring the class clown can sometimes take the steam out of the kid. He isn’t trying to disrupt class, but might not realize how his antics are getting in the way of things. On the other hand, maybe they do know what they are doing.

Either way, discipline the kid after class. Don’t bring them in front of the class, or yell at them. Simply pull them aside after class, or give them an extra essay to do instead. That way the class clown isn’t not getting in trouble, and he doesn’t have the luxury of seeing your reaction during class. That is a win win.

A class clown can be funny, and I think most people can see the value in a class clown. However, when the class clown gets too rowdy you have to put them in their place. Don’t do it in front of people as they will have won even if you do discipline them. Just keep your cool, and remain in control of the situation.
